Notes for the day:
Maybe if I try black lights instead...
Saturday, June 14, 2008

I replaced the bulbs in my living room with some "daylight" CFL bulbs. This seemed like a good idea at the time.

I remember several years ago, when the Reveal bulbs came out, I tried a few of them. I liked how it looked, but I didn't realize how much they screw up colors under them.

So, to try something different, I thought I'd buy some "daylight" bulbs. They're called that because they have a different color temperature than standard bulbs that's closer to sunlight. Still not a bad idea yet. The problem comes from the different between daylight and regular incandescent bulbs.

You see, daylight has a color temperature of 6500K, which is almost blue, where incandescent bulbs typically have a color temperature of 2700K, which is almost orange. So now, when the lights are on in both the living room and my office, formerly known as the dining room, it presents a drastic difference. If I leave them on at the same time for too long, while sitting at my desk, it really does give me a headache since the living room is constantly in my peripheral vision.

And in the end, I'm not sure how funny this was, but I thought it was a important lesson about what NOT to do.

The technical term is...
Basically the "Color Temperature" is measured and defined in Lighting as a CRI (Color Rendering Index). It lets you know what things will look like in the type of light provided by the bulbs.. :-)

I'm only exaggerating a little.
