Notes for the day:
Perl vs. Python
Friday, December 7, 2007

I don't write Perl code often enough. I had to write what should have been a quick little program earlier this week. It ended up taking me at least an hour instead of the 10 minutes it shoudl have. Ever since then, I've had an image of a rusty pearl in my head.

Then someone went and posted this comic about Python on Wednesday. I've avoided learning much about it, other than the fact that the mailing list software I use was written in Python (and possible a few other things, but that's the only one that springs to mind). But after an introduction like that, I had to look. Then I had to stop myself from actually spending the time learning the parts of it's syntax that differ from what I'm used to because I had other things I needed to be doing.

I think my biggest complaint about the language is that anymore, I spend most of my time writting PHP which uses a $ before variables and Python doesn't. I first got used to that from Perl (which also uses % and @ in front of hashes and arrays). I end up having issues when I have to go write javascript because I keep trying to put dollar signs before my variable names.

Perl and Python and Bears? Oh my! I've lost my mind. Please bear with me.

  • There are new Daily Wisdom comics coming on Monday and Wednesday. Still working on a new IMU for Friday. I'm hoping to start a new trend.
  • In the past week, I've found 4 or 5 typos on the website. I'm shocked my grammar nazi friends hadn't found them yet.
  • rennissauscing (verb): getting drunk while expanding your skill set
  • @kezhound Chrome doesn't support it even for raw display of the feed.
  • I don't know how it happened, but there's a DW update today. http://wisdomfortheday.com
